Unbleached 100% cotton Indian prefold diapers are an economical and effective way to cloth diaper. If you are diapering on a tight budget, prefolds along with inexpensive waterproof covers can be the mainstay of your diaper stash. And you will find plenty of uses for prefolds once they're retired from diaper duty!
Prefold diapers are 100% unbleached natural cotton, with a thick center panel that is "prefolded" and sewn in place. There are 2 or 4 layers of cotton fabric on the sides and 6 or 8 layers in the middle (2x8x2 or 4x6x4).
Prefolds shrink (around 10%) and "quilt up" after washing. The image shows a newborn prefold before and after washing. Prefolds become softer and more absorbent with repeated washing and are not fully absorbent until they have been washed and dried at least 3-4 times. The larger and thicker the prefold, the more absorbent it will be.
Prefold dimensions (before washing)
- Newborn size is 9.5 x 14" (2x6x2 ply)
- Infant size is 12 x 16" (4x6x4 ply)
- New capri size is 14 x 17" (4x8x4 ply)
- Regular size are 14 x 21" (4x6x4 ply)
Prefolds can be pinned or snappi-ed in place, or they can just be folded in thirds and laid in a snug-fitting cover.
