Fabric Information

Diaper Fabric (natural fibers):

1. Bamboo french terry (viscose made from bamboo) is a soft, durable and absorbent fabric that is useful as an outer layer in fitteds and prefolds. French terry is similar to loop terry but has a flat "open" weave that is compatible with Snappi® fasteners. The fiber content is fiber content is 70% bamboo and 30% organic cotton or 70% bamboo, 25% organic cotton and 5% spandex for stretch french terry.

2. Bamboo velour (viscose made from bamboo) is a very silky-soft non-synthetic absorbent fabric. It does not wick moisture but is not uncomfortable when wet. It's especially useful for those with sensitive skin and is often used for babies who cannot tolerate other diaper fabric. Bamboo is naturally antimicrobial and may resist odors better than cotton. The bamboo velour fiber content is 70% bamboo and 28% organic cotton, with 2% polyester in the fabric backing for stability. Bamboo is an environmentally sustainable fiber and is grown without pesticides or fertilizers.

3. Bamboo fleece (heavy weight) is a soft, thick, non-synthetic absorbent fabric. It does not wick moisture but is not uncomfortable when wet. It is useful for heavy wetters or for longer times between changes. The fiber content is 70% bamboo, 30% organic cotton. Bamboo fleece stays soft over time and has excellent stain resistance, and solids can usually be shaken off without sticking. Bamboo fleece is slightly slower to dry compared to other natural fiber fabrics.

4. Hemp fleece is a soft, thick, non-synthetic highly absorbent fabric. It does not wick moisture but is not uncomfortable when wet. It is useful for heavy wetters or for longer times between changes. The fiber content is 70% hemp, 30% organic cotton. Hemp fleece is not quite as silky as bamboo fleece but it dries relatively quickly and provides excellent absorption on contact without multiple pre-washings. The hemp fleece used in Otter Blotters™ diapers is specially milled to be extraordinarily soft--and is superior to typical hemp fleece found in most cloth diapers. It has been pre-washed before sewing to minimize shrinkage. Hemp is considered one of the most environmentally sustainable fibers, because it grows quickly, enriches the soil as it grows, doesn't need fertilizers or much water, and can be processed without harsh chemicals.

5. 100% Organic cotton sherpa is luxurious thick, soft, absorbent fabric. It is very useful for heavy wetters as it absorbs well but does not take long to dry. Several washings are necessary to remove the natural plant oils from the organic cotton so that the fabric will absorb on contact and cotton sherpa is slightly more bulky than bamboo fleece. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or artificial fertilizers and and the fabric is made using environmentally friendly processing methods. Organic cotton fabric is grown and manufactured in the US.

6. 100% Organic cotton velour is a soft, durable, non-synthetic absorbent fabric. It does not wick moisture, but is not uncomfortable when wet. It's not quite as silky-soft as bamboo velour, but may wear better over time. The fiber content is 100% organic cotton. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or artificial fertilizers and and the fabric is made using environmentally friendly processing methods. Organic cotton fabric is grown and manufactured in the US.

Diaper Fabric (synthetic):

1. Microchamois microfleece is a stay-dry fabric, meaning that liquid wicks right through it, so baby's skin stays dry. It's hard to tell if a diaper is wet if you only touch the microfleece. Messy solids do not stick to it and the diaper can be emptied into the toilet without scrubbing or soaking. The microfleece used for Otter BlottersTM  O-PadsTM is very soft and resists staining and pilling wash after wash.

2. Suedecloth is a soft, stay-dry, wicking fabric. Messy solids do not stick to it and the diaper can be emptied into the toilet without scrubbing or soaking. Suedecloth resists staining and does not pill, so will retain its appearance over time. It is very thin and is a useful fabric for creating a trim, non-bulky diaper.

3. Supplex microfiber is the same thin, soft, water-repellent and durable fabric used in surfing shorts. It wears beautifully as an outer fabric layer, without fading or pilling, and adds an extra layer of water repellency in addition to a hidden PUL layer. Because supplex is a polyester fabric, the fading, wicking, leaking and shrinking that are seen with natural fiber fabrics like cotton are minimal.

Shoe Fabric

1. Polartec® WindPro® fleece is a water repellent, breathable synthetic fabric, which comes in different "faces," and weights. The summerweight WindPro is a thin but durable fabric with a "hardface," which means that the surface of the fabric is smooth, durable, and not likely to pick up dirt, lint or pet hair.

2.Polartec® WindBloc® fleece is a water repellent, breathable synthetic fabric which is available in a soft, velour face.

3. Polartec® Aqua Shell® is a Windproof/breathable, and highly water-resistant symthetic fabric. This fabric features excellent stretch while providing great abrasion resistance. Aqua Shell® is a very thin but durable fabric with a "hardface," which means that the surface of the fabric is smooth, durable, and not likely to pick up dirt, lint or pet hair.

4. Toray Ultrasuede® is a washable, durable alternative to leather. Unlike leather, ultrasuede resists shrinking, fading, crocking (dye rubbing off) and cracking, and is much kinder to cows!

5. Toughtek® is a tough, non-slip, synthetic fabric which is extremely durable and can withstand washing, drying and gravel driveways!
